SIMULTANEOUS NuSTAR/CHANDRA OBSERVATIONS OF THE BURSTING PULSAR GRO J1744-28 DURING ITS THIRD REACTIVATION

We report on a 10 ks simultaneous Chandra/HETG−NuSTAR observation of the Bursting Pulsar, GRO J1744−28, during its third detected outburst since discovery and after nearly 18 years of quiescence. The source is detected up to 60 keV with an Eddington persistent flux level. Seven bursts, followed by dips, are seen with Chandra, three of which are also detected with NuSTAR. Timing analysis reveals...

A Chandra observation of GRO J1744–28: the bursting pulsar in quiescence

We present a Chandra/ACIS-I observation of GRO J1744–28. We detected a source at a position of R.A = 17 44 33.09 and Dec. = –28 44 27.0 (J2000.0; with a 1σ error of ∼0.8 arcseconds), consistent with both ROSAT and interplanetary network localizations of GRO J1744–28 when it was in outburst. This makes it likely that we have detected the quiescent X-ray counterpart of GRO J1744– 28. Our Chandra ...

Post-Burst Quasi-Periodic Oscillations from GRO J1744−28 and from the Rapid Burster

The repetitive X-ray bursts from the accretion-powered pulsar GRO J1744−28 show similarities to the type II X-ray bursts from the Rapid Burster. Several authors (notably Lewin et al.) have suggested that the bursts from GRO J1744−28 are type II bursts (which arise from the sudden release of gravitational potential energy). In this paper, we present another similarity between these sources. Ross...

Gro J1744-28: Last Gasps of a Dying Low-mass X-ray Binary

We argue that the bursting, transient X-ray source GRO J1744-28 is a binary consisting of a very low-mass (M ≈ 0.2M⊙), highly evolved giant star that is transferring mass by Roche lobe overflow onto a high-mass (M ≈ 1.8M⊙) neutron star. We explore a picture in which the bursts are due to thermonuclear flashes in matter that has accreted onto the neutron star. We attribute the unusually hard spe...

Evidence for “Propeller” Effects In X-ray Pulsars GX 1+4 And GRO J1744-28

We present observational evidence for “propeller” effects in two X–ray pulsars, GX 1+4 and GRO J1744–28. Both sources were monitored regularly by the Rossi X–ray Timing Explorer (RXTE) throughout a decaying period in the X–ray brightness. Quite remarkably, strong X–ray pulsation became unmeasurable when total X–ray flux had dropped below a certain threshold. Such a phenomenon is a clear indicat...
